Making Your Enrollment Decisions

When you first are eligible for benefits with JHU–whether you are newly hired or are just becoming eligible for benefits–you’ll be asked to make some important decisions.

You’ll need to make your enrollment decisions within 30 days of your hire or eligibility date and your elections are effective on your hire/eligibility date. The chart below summarizes your enrollment decisions.

For these benefits… When to enroll…
 
Medical, dental, flexible spending accounts, short-term disability, life insurance (including dependent life), personal accident insurance, vision Within your first 30 days of hire or new eligibility. Enrollment effective on your hire date.
Note: If you do not enroll within your first 30 days, your next opportunity to enroll will be during annual enrollment, unless you have a qualified life event (e.g., birth, adoption, marriage, etc.)
403(b) Retirement Plan Available immediately upon hire or new eligibility; you may enroll at any time.
Note: Bargaining Unit requirements vary
Auto and home-owner’s insurance, long–term care insurance At any time

As you prepare to enroll, you should have your dependents’ names, birth dates, and Social Security numbers on hand, as well as names, birth dates, and addresses of your beneficiary(ies).

Take Action

Shortly after you become eligible for benefits, you will receive a Choices Summary form by email (if your university email access has been set up) or by mail to your home address. Please complete and return this form to the Benefits Service Center within 30 days according to the instructions provided with the document.

If You Don’t Take Action

If you are a new employee or newly eligible and do not enroll in your benefits within 30 days of your date of hire or eligibility, you will receive the default benefit coverage listed in the chart below. If you are a member of the Bargaining Unit and you do not enroll, you will not be covered by any JHU benefits.
